The Shape of Things Class book activity based on the book The Shape of Things by Ann Dodds.
The Shape of Things Class book activity based on the book The Shape of Things by Ann Dodds.
Introduction to activity:
· Read “The Shape of Things” by Dayle Ann Dodds.
· “A square is just a square Until you add a roof, two windows and a door, then it’s much, much more!”
· Ask students to see if they see any other items in the pictures that are made from squares.
· Call on students and also have students turn to a partner to orally speak about the squares they can identify in the picture book.
Instruction:
· Read “The Shape of Things” by Dayle Ann Dodds, the whole book while focusing on all the other shapes.
· For each shape have students point out other items that are made from that shape, for example, a sun (circle).
· Explain that we will be making a class book just like “The Shape of Things book we just read!”
· Each student can pick either a circle or rectangle to make the object.
· Using the teacher example created of a flower, explain that they will create anything they want that has a rectangle or circle in it. Using the ideas from the book can help.
· Glue the circle or rectangle in the center of the paper.
· Then create your object by drawing around the shape.
· For example, I drew petals around the circle to make a flower and a stem at the bottom. Explain to only use the top half because we will be writing on the bottom half.
· Fold the paper in half so that students know to only make their picture on the top half and the bottom half will be for writing.
· Write on the white board, a circle is just a circle until you add ____ and _____. Then it becomes a _______. Also write, A rectangle is just a rectangle until you add _____and ______. Then it becomes a _____.
· Explain to students that they will write this on the bottom half of the paper and fill in the blanks with what they created in their picture.
· Read the teacher example, “A circle is just a circle until you add petals and a stem. Then it becomes a flower. –Mr. Brown

Great Apps for teaching!
Made a screen cast for the app Brain POP that I use in my third and fifth grade classrooms, the students love the app and are so engaged. It just mixes up the usual science, history, etc. lesson, and makes it fun. Check out my screen cast on how to use the app below:
